Let's find out all you need to know. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origins: from the OAU to the African Union<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L'<strong>Organization of African Unity (OAU)<\/strong> is founded on <strong>May 25, 1963 in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)<\/strong> by 32 newly independent African countries. Its main aims were to :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fighting colonialism and apartheid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting unity and solidarity between states<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defending the sovereignty and integrity of African countries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visit <strong>2002<\/strong>the OAU was replaced by <strong>African Union<\/strong>at a historic summit in Durban, South Africa, with broader objectives and a more dynamic approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the African Union today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Union is a <strong>continental organization<\/strong> grouping <strong>55 African countries<\/strong>. Its registered office is at <strong>Addis Ababa<\/strong>in Ethiopia. It acts as a <strong>a common voice for African states<\/strong> in the political, economic, social and cultural fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Its main objectives:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Promoting continental integration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defending peace and security in Africa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting democracy and human rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthening economic and social development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speaking with one voice in international forums<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does the African Union work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The AU's main institutions :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Institution<\/th><th>Main role<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Union Assembly<\/strong><\/td><td>Supreme body of heads of state<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Executive Board<\/strong><\/td><td>Foreign Ministers - implementing decisions<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>AU Commission<\/strong><\/td><td>Administrative body, based in Addis Ababa<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Pan-African Parliament<\/strong><\/td><td>Consultative voice of African peoples<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Peace and Security Council<\/strong><\/td><td>Conflict prevention and management<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>African Court of Human Rights<\/strong><\/td><td>Justice for African citizens<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commission Chairman :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Current (2025) : <strong>Moussa Faki Mahamat<\/strong> (Chad)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He directs the administration, coordinates policy and represents the AU internationally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peace and security: a top priority<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Union plays a central role in the <strong>conflict prevention and management<\/strong> on the continent :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Peace missions (e.g. Somalia, Sahel, DRC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Political mediation (e.g. Ethiopia, Sudan, Libya)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Project to create a <strong>African Standby Force<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its founding principle is : <strong>\"Non-indifference in the face of mass crimes<\/strong>replacing the classic <strong>non-interference<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Economic development: an integrated Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Union is working towards a <strong>sustainable economic integration<\/strong>through :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit <strong>AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area)<\/strong> the world's largest integrated market<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agenda 2063: a <strong>strategic vision for the Africa of tomorrow<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pan-African infrastructure projects (roads, trains, ICT)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Programs for youth, women, agriculture and industrialization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education, health, culture: concrete initiatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Union supports many social sectors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Harmonization of African higher education (bachelor's-master's-doctorate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fighting pandemics with the <strong>CDC Africa<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting African languages and cultures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Youth and women empowerment initiatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International partnerships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AU works with many international partners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>UN, European Union, China, United States, BRICS<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South-South cooperation (e.g. Morocco, Turkey, India)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Representation in the <strong>G20 since 2023<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It strengthens Africa's place in global governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its progress, the African Union faces a number of challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Financing (heavy external dependence)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of coordination between member countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delays in policy implementation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weak citizen participation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Political instability in some states<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: A Union still under construction, but essential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The African Union is one of the <strong>pillars of the continent's future<\/strong>.
