This ambitious project spearheaded by the African Union aims to transform the continent's economy, boost intra-African trade, strengthen industrialization, and accelerate inclusive growth. In this article, we explore <strong>all you need to know about ZLECAf<\/strong>from its origins to today's issues, opportunities and challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is ZLECAf?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit <strong>ZLECAf<\/strong>or <strong>African Continental Free Trade Area<\/strong>is a trade agreement between the member countries of the African Union aimed at creating a single market for goods and services, promoting the free movement of people and capital, and laying the foundations for a continental customs union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially launched in <strong>2018 in Kigali<\/strong> (Rwanda), the ZLECAf came into force on <strong>January 1, 2021<\/strong>. It currently groups <strong>54 out of 55 African countries<\/strong>which makes it <strong>the world's largest free trade zone in terms of the number of participating countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and milestones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th><strong>Date<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Key event<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>2012<\/td><td>Decision to create the AfCFTA by the African Union<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>2018<\/td><td>Agreement signed in Kigali (Rwanda)<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>2019<\/td><td>Legal entry into force of the agreement<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>2021<\/td><td>Official start of trade<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Today<\/td><td>Progressive implementation in member countries<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The main objectives of the ZLECAf<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ZLECAf aims to :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a <strong>continental market<\/strong> more than <strong>1.4 billion people<\/strong> with a combined GDP of over <strong>3,400 billion USD<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increase intra-African trade<\/strong>Today, this is very low (around 15 %, compared with over 60 % in Europe).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce or eliminate <strong>tariff and non-tariff barriers<\/strong> between African countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stimulate <strong>industrialization<\/strong>the <strong>job creation<\/strong>and <strong>economic diversification<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increasing <strong>competitiveness<\/strong> of African companies on the global market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How ZLECAf works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ZLECAf is based on several pillars:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reducing customs duties<\/strong> the countries undertake to phase out import taxes on at least <strong>90 % of products traded<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Access to the common market<\/strong> abolition of quantitative restrictions and facilitation of trade formalities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dispute resolution<\/strong> a mechanism has been set up to resolve trade disputes between member states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complementary policies<\/strong> The integration of aspects relating to competition, intellectual property, investment and e-commerce.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ZLECAf opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For companies :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Access to <strong>new markets<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower export costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possibility of inserting into <strong>regional value chains<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For citizens :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creation of<strong>skilled jobs<\/strong>These include agribusiness, processing and services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better access to consumer goods thanks to <strong>lower prices<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of <strong>private sector<\/strong> and <strong>SMES<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For States :<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diversification of revenue sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of <strong>regional infrastructures<\/strong> (roads, telecommunications, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthening <strong>South-South economic relations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges to overcome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its ambitions, the FTAAf faces several challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Insufficient infrastructure<\/strong> Roads, ports and railways are often dilapidated or non-existent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complex customs formalities<\/strong> bureaucracy, corruption, administrative slowness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of processed products<\/strong> Most African countries still export raw materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic inequalities between countries<\/strong> Stronger economies could benefit more than smaller ones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Political will<\/strong> It's crucial that governments live up to their commitments and work together effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of the ZLECAf Secretariat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit <strong>ZLECAf General Secretariat<\/strong>based in <strong>Accra (Ghana)<\/strong>is headed by <strong>Wamkele Mene<\/strong> since 2020. He is responsible for :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oversee the implementation of the agreement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide technical assistance to member states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote intra-African trade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expected impacts on a continental scale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the World Bank, by 2035 the FTAAf could :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increase real income<\/strong> average of 7 %.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reducing poverty<\/strong> of 30 million people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create about <strong>18 million jobs<\/strong> more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: A promising future for Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The FTAAf is not just a trade agreement, it's also a way of life. <strong>a truly pan-African social project<\/strong>.
